'Lucky' birds a trouble for farmer

A fruit farmer in Jimo, Shandong Province, is in a dilemma after hundreds of magpies descended on his crops.

The farmer is becoming very anxious as he sees the birds destroy his crops of peaches and pears.

His efforts to drive the pests away with sticks and scarecrows have failed to bear fruit.

His neighbours have suggested that he kill the birds with pesticide, but Fang said he could not contemplate this, as magpies were believed to be a sign of "good fortune."
